DHIC, Inc. celebrated a major renovation of the historic Murphey School common areas and dedication of the Ralph Campbell, Jr. Library and Media Room at the school on December 7th.
The Murphey School, an affordable apartment community for seniors originally redeveloped by DHIC in 1990, is located in downtown Raleigh and has a rich history in the local civil rights movement. "The Murphey School renewal is an example of DHIC's commitment to reinvest in and maintain our properties, so they can continue to be good neighbors, great affordable housing, and valuable assets to the community," said Gregg Warren, President of DHIC, Inc. "We are grateful for the investment of our partners who made this project possible: the City of Raleigh, Community Housing Capital, and NeighborWorks® America"
State Senator Dan Blue, City Councilor Eugene Weeks, and former Raleigh mayor Charles Meeker spoke at the dedication. Senator Blue, responsible for state legislation that enabled the City to lease the school from the State, recalled the significant community efforts made to save the school from demolition in the late 1980s. Mayor Meeker related Ralph Campbell's public service and his role in helping pave the way for Murphey School to become affordable housing while a Raleigh City Councilor. Mayor Meeker also introduced Mildred Christmas, Mr. Campbell's sister (pictured above), who spoke powerfully about her brother's community service and her family's history related to the Murphey School, including her brother Bill's integration of the school in 1960 as a second grader.
