Stories of Hope and Home
Meet Tammy Smith
Tammy never imagined that owning a home could be within reach. With over $200,000 in student loan debt and no examples of homeownership in her immediate family, she thought renting was her only option.
That changed when Tammy connected with DHIC. Through our Homeownership Center, she worked with a counselor who guided her step by step - teaching her how to budget, manage debt, and improve her credit. Tammy says:
"DHIC made it possible for me to buy a home and build financial stability."
After two years of hard work, Tammy closed on her first home in March. Today, she has a year's worth of savings, strong financial habits, and a safe, stable home for her 14-year-old daughter.
Meet Terrence Perry
When Terrence lost his housing unexpectedly after the death of a friend, he faced a month of homelessness. "Affordable housing is a Godsend for people like myself who need a hand up, not a handout," Terrence says.
Through a peer support friend, Terrence learned about DHIC and Brookridge Apartments. Within two weeks, our team helped him secure a safe, affordable studio apartment - a turning point that changed everything.
Seven years later, Terrence's life looks completely different. He has financial stability, owns life and health insurance, and banks with a local credit union. He bought a car, works consistently, and even became a certified life coach. Today, Terrence is writing books and helping others navigate housing challenges.
"I could not have been able to live in Raleigh if it were not for DHIC’s commitment to affordable housing. I’m forever grateful to the DHIC team for their commitment."
The Sunshine Committee
At The Village at Washington Terrace, safety isn't just a priority - it's a shared responsibility. In 2023, a small group of residents, led by DHIC Family Service Coordinator Bridgette Lynn, formed the Sunshine Committee with a powerful vision: Create a safe, organized, and engaged neighborhood where every resident feels seen, valued, and connected.
Together, they launched initiatives that made a real difference:
Installed speed bumps and clear signage for parking, speed limits, and play zones
Promoted "See Something, Say Something" to strengthen awareness and accountability
Built a trusted partnership with the Raleigh Police Department for ongoing support
Residents report feeling safer, more informed, and more connected than ever before.
As Patricia Swasey, DHIC Board Member, shares:
"The joy of serving my neighbors, watching our community grow, and knowing that we did it together is the heart of this work."
