Hardee Street:
Designed for Dignity
As housing prices rise across the country, growing cities such as Durham, NC feel the need for affordable housing more than ever. One project built in response to this need is the Hardee Street Apartments, developed by Self-Help Credit Union and DHIC. Hardee Street challenges preconceptions about affordable housing by also providing high quality amenities and spaces that promote a sense of community and belonging.
By documenting the story of Hardee Street Apartments — starting from the context of Durham’s affordable housing crisis, through its construction and design, and ending with impressions from its current residents — it is clear that affordable housing does not have to be a comprise, but instead can be a model for high-quality living at prices accessible to everyone.
